Quick Post: Macarena 🎤

12:06

What do you think about when you hear Macarena?

Do you give an involuntary cringe or is your inner diva dancing with glee?

The Los Del Rio (Bayside Boys Remix) classic, not the 1993 original (which is also good) turned 20 this month. The track's fizzy, upbeat tempo has made it synonymous at school discos, holiday resorts and wedding receptions the world over.

Iconic dance routine aside, Macarena might just have the strongest staying power and nostalgia of any nineties song. Perfect low-hair braids, florescent lipstick, purple eyeshadow crimped hair and funky hair clips. The video also features WOC from a variety of backgrounds which some videos still struggle to represent in 2016.

Macarena is pretty subjective to most people; not in the literal meaning of the song (which is another story in itself) but its meaning to each individual. To some it speaks to those nights where you were trying your best to get drunk at a family event while inadvertently trying to avoid members of your extended family. To others it symbolises long, hot nights in European holiday resorts and rose-tinted nostalgia and others just straight-up love it. So soundtrack of your life or not, who is to argue with anyone's interpretation of the song? when it speaks to so many facets of personality.

In my long relationship with the song, I've come to the conclusion that Macarena has subconsciously become such a part of our collective, musical psyche that it could be anything. Love it or hate it only a small minority of songs have power to conjure up such colourful memories, hence why you can hear it on any given occasion you just accept it. The track is truly a connector of generations from grandparents to grandchildren. So I salute you for many a good night, Macarena. Long may your reign of floor-filing and infuriation continue.
